Acts 20:35 tells us that it’s better to give rather than receive. Today, that’s countercultural. According to a study by Professor Jean Twenge and other researchers, today’s young people are more narcissistic than ever. They not only value themselves more than others—they just don’t care about anybody else. The West has typically been a giving culture. Is that changing? They’re now giving out of obligation to a cause—investing in something that only affects THEM. This can be a problem for the church, mission groups, and other nonprofits dependent on generosity to help them share the Gospel. How do we as parents change this? Apart from leading them to Christ, model intentional generous giving. Make giving a top priority. Include your kids. They’ll model it to their kids.
