We’ve all run into people who think more of themselves than what’s, umm, comfortable. But what do we do when our kids have that kind of behavior? The first thing is don’t get angry. There may be a lot going on here. Investigate. Is your son or daughter dealing with confidence issues? You say, “No, they’re cocky, remember?” Well, sometimes poor self-esteem manifests itself in overconfidence. Or they may be really good at something, and they just don't know how to be humble about it. Teach them to be thankful for the gifts and abilities God has given them, and then use their gifts to point them to Christ. Your Bible can help guide: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves” (Philippians 2:3 NIV).
