There are many times when I feel like I’m not very connected to my daughter. She says words that I understand, but for whatever reason, they don’t mean the same thing to her and her friends as they’re defined in the dictionary—peeps, dope, IDK, goat. Peeps aren’t marshmallow treats, dope isn’t pot, IDK isn’t a company, and goat doesn’t mean an animal that says, “bah.” Should we know what are kids are saying? Absolutely, because some words are bad—sexual and other meanings. There are websites to help you, though. But we also need to remind our kids not to use slang words when they don’t know their meaning and to disrespect adults. Encourage them to guard their testimony and their relationship with Christ above fitting in.
