Who in the world wants our kids to be disappointed? I certainly don’t. We all want our kids to excel in everything they do, but the reality is they’re human and they’re going to fail. They’re not going to be good at everything they do. So, should we allow our kids to try out for an athletic team? Absolutely! Trying out for a team builds character. It requires dedication to practice. It takes confidence to perform well either on the field, on the court, or on the track. And it takes a person of character to respond to being on a team graciously or to respond humbly when they’re cut. The bottom line is team sports help our kids learn how to deal with conflict, winning (and losing!), and other pressure.
