Your 19-year-old struggled in school. Their friends are away at college. They’re planning for the next phase of life, but our graduate is home—no job, no desire, no plans. What do we do? You’ve probably heard the term “tough love.” This is when we need to tread lightly, but firmly, in helping our kids grow. College isn’t for everybody, but work IS for everyone, and everyone can do something. So set some goals. Help them look for jobs that they can do: fast food, factory work, just something. Until they find something, chores around the house are very appropriate. A move-out deadline can be motivating too. Anger won’t help though. So do it in love. And pray. God can do miracles.
