The circle of life isn’t easy sometimes. At some point in time, we all end up parenting our elderly parents. While I haven’t had to deal with this yet, I’m sure it won’t be long. As I’ve watched friends and even my parents work through it, I’ve learned something: plan for it. And cherish those times. What do I mean by plan for it? Come to an agreement with your parents about when you start making decisions to sell the house, move into assisted living and other specialized care. Talk about all scenarios, and make sure it’s written down so they can see it. And have them sign it—not as a contract, but as a reminder if/when their memory fails. Then, pray. These can be difficult months, but they can also be precious.
