How many of us as parents have ever thought that? As we look at the culture around us, we wonder why we’d EVER send our kids to the “wolves,” so to speak. I know I have. Some send their kids to Christian school or teach their kids at home to protect them from the evil that our world has to offer. While protecting our kids is a good thing, is it always the right thing? Now, I’m not saying that private or home schooling isn’t good, but should we as Christians also consider that, by sending our kids to public schools, they could be a witness? Instead of cursing the darkness, turn on a light. Are we known more about what we’re against, our what we’re FOR (which is Jesus)?

I used to make the same argument, (I am a product of public school) until I realized children are not ready to be a “witness” in an environment where they are being influenced by adults (teachers) who are much more powerful than they are in their worldview. Now I firmly believe in keeping my kids out of public school, and using this time to EQUIP them to become a light later in life, after they have had more time to develop a Biblical worldview and the confidence to defend it. Sure we as adult Christians need to be a light, but our kids are very impressionable and public school takes hours and hours away from the time parents could be spending with their kids to teach, mentor and disciple them to become powerful witnesses for God’s kingdom.
Great points. I still believe God calls some to public school. Others He doesn’t. Thanks for posting this and listening and/or reading Parent Minute.
