I was talking to a friend who’s coaching little league baseball. He told me that he’s spending most of his time explaining basic rules like, when you hit the ball you run to first base, not second or third. And there are three strikes—and you’re out. And three outs per inning, and then you go play the field. When I was eight years old, I not only KNEW the rules, I was complaining about the bad calls by umpires. Why is this? Kids aren’t playing outside—without their mobile devices. This summer, take them away. Give them a bat, ball, glove, or basketball. And just let them go OUTSIDE and play! If that causes some stress for our kids, we should have been done it a long time ago.
