It’s dinnertime again, and you’ve worked hard to have a meal everybody likes. But little Snodgrass takes one look at it, and he immediately starts throwing a fit. Not only does he not want to eat it—he’s ready to chuck it at you. What are you going to do? The menu in our family has always been: take it or leave it. If your kid is bull-headed enough, he may go without once or twice, but when the stomach growling kicks in, it’s a much stronger deterrent than any discipline you can give him. I know there are some foods we just don’t like, but teaching our kids to be adventurous—trying new things and politely saying, “No more, thank you”—is a great life skill to learn at a young age.
