Have you ever been in a situation where one of your kids thought somebody was their best friend, only to find out later it wasn’t true? I’ve actually been there. I thought somebody was my best friend and confidant, only to realize that it was a one-way street. It was kind of hard to process because I poured my thoughts, life, and emotions out to this person. What’s the Bible say about true friendship? John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends” (NKJV). Proverbs 17:17 says, “A friend loves at all times” (NKJV). Proverbs 27:17 reminds us that “iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” (NIV). We need to help our kids understand it’s not as important to HAVE a best friend but to BE a best friend.
