Confidence can make a difference between success and failure in a lot of kids. Sometimes there’s a danger of overconfidence. But the reality is we can make a huge difference in our kids’ lives by what we say and do. I’ve seen kids who are constantly being coached by their dad in the stands while they’re trying to give it all on the basketball court. The stress is uncomfortable for everybody. But I’ve also seen similar situations where dad shouts, “Good job!”—and those two words are the motivation their kids need to take it up a notch. I’ve gotta admit I’m that dad coaching in the stands. If you’re like me, STOP IT. Let your kids play. Cheers and other encouragement—great. Barking orders? No.
