As Christians, our kids can face incredible temptation. As they play with neighbor kids, interact with kids at church, or by watching TV, they see and hear things that don’t necessarily match up with our values. How do we handle it when our kids challenge our rules and convictions when their peers really don’t agree? What I do is explain the difference between biblical truth and preferences. There may be nothing wrong with watching TV, but watching a show that depicts immoral behavior, well, that’s something the Bible says we should run from. Or maybe your rule is that you can date at eighteen, but another family says sixteen. Well, that’s a preference. Conflict isn’t bad unless you fly off the handle.
