Having a special needs child who doesn’t look like a special needs child can be kind of difficult. Some people are cruel. Out of ignorance, they say things that hurt you AND your child. The reality is autism, sensory issues, Asperger’s syndrome, OCD, and other complex issues don’t manifest themselves in making our kids look differently. As Christians, we need to remember parents of special needs kiddos need compassion—not contempt—when these God-given kids misbehave. Comments like, “They look normal to me” or “Can you control your kids?” are more hurtful than helpful. Realize that in many cases these kids have spent hours in therapy, Mom has spent hours working with them (not playing), and just being outside is a victory.
