Being a parent of a young adult isn’t always easy, especially if they moved out to go to college, now they’re back and you don’t see any movement to get out on their own. How do we get them to realize the time is getting short and the next step of life is near? First, they need to know you love them. Conflict may cloak that. Then, we need to have a frank conversation. If they’re not working, give them a deadline to get a good paying job. Help them set a budget. Set some savings goals. And as those goals are met, set deadlines. If they’re struggling with your “rules” ask yourself, “Is this worth the conflict?” If it’s a preference, agree to disagree. If it’s a moral failure, speak the truth in love – sometimes TOUGH love.
