As parents, many of us have had teens do things that are against the rules, then try to hide it from us. How did we handle it? Sometimes not very well. While we all hope our teens make wise choices, isn’t it great they’re making mistakes that we help correct, firmly yet lovingly, while they live with us? Let’s make sure we’re communicating clearly what’s expected. When they fail, explain what they did wrong and why. Don’t let them hide it or deny what they did. Next, biblical discipline is designed not just to correct, but mold into stronger Christ followers. That discipline should be done with truth, but love and compassion. Hebrews 12 is clear that discipline is painful – it hurts at the time – even from God, but it brings righteousness.
